How to Calculate Attendance Percentage
The formula for attendance percentage is straightforward: Attendance % = (Days Present ÷ Total Working Days) × 100. For example, if an employee was present 21 out of 25 working days, their attendance percentage is (21 ÷ 25) × 100 = 84%.
When calculating attendance, only include working days — exclude weekends, public holidays, and approved leave days that don't count as absences per your policy.
Why Attendance Percentage Matters
Attendance percentage is one of the most commonly tracked workforce metrics. It signals operational reliability, helps HR teams identify chronic absenteeism, and forms the basis for attendance-related HR decisions such as performance reviews, leave policy enforcement, and compliance reporting.
Many organizations set a minimum attendance threshold — commonly 75–85% — below which employees may face HR intervention. Schools and academic institutions often require 75% as a minimum for course eligibility.
